Department: Chief Harbour Master
Reporting to: Harbour Master (SMS & VTS)
Grade: 5
Salary: £52,945 per annum (may be negotiable dependant on experience)
Base: Gravesend, Kent

Who we are:

The Port of London Authority is the statutory harbour authority for the tidal Thames and responsible for 95 miles of the River Thames from the Estuary to Teddington Lock in West London. The Chief Harbour Master’s Department is responsible for ensuring compliance with the Port Marine Safety Code, ensuring the safety of navigation for all mariners in the Port of London, enforcing the rules and regulations and leading on Port Security and Emergency and Resilience Planning for the PLA.

The role:

We are looking for a marine professional to support the wider Harbour Master’s Team leading on document creation and review and deputising for the Marine Manager, which will see you working a variety of projects, liaising with key stakeholders on new ventures and participating in future planning to ensure projects don’t adversely affect the safety of river users.

Primarily based at our Head Office in Gravesend, Kent you will meet with stakeholders and partners across the length of the river as well as host visits afloat.

This is a varied and interesting role, and for the right person, is a steppingstone into Deputy/ Harbour Master positions.

What we are looking for:

You will have a broad marine background with thorough knowledge of the Port Marine Safety Code risk assessment techniques and relevant ports and marine legislation.

You will use your experience and knowledge to create and review documentation, such as manuals, guides, policies and procedures, as well as research and inform decisions on the navigational implications of projects across the length of the River Thames.

You will have a logical approach to problem solving, a keen eye for detail and a focus on accuracy. You will be customer focused with an ability to quickly build relations and influence people at all levels.
