The Role
This is a key role within the Marine Operations division of Woods’ Silver Fleet, responsible for the day-to-day operation and maintenance of company vessels. The Apprentice will work with the team to ensure vessels are operated efficiently and safely while maintaining the highest standards of passenger safety, customer service and professionalism.
The role requires a proactive approach to vessel maintenance and operational performance, working closely with crew members, contractors and partners. Working hours are maintained in accordance with the Working Time Directive.

The Company
The Woods family have been Thames Watermen since 1866. They launched into the twentieth century with sightseeing tours by Lillian and Alfred Woods from the Tower of London. Lillian encouraged her son Alan’s inspired idea to gradually build the Silver Fleet in the 1960s, with each vessel handcrafted for the River Thames in Kent, Suffolk and Cornish shipyards.
Today, the Woods family operate a fleet of luxury passenger vessels across both sightseeing and private charter operations.
Woods’ Silver Fleet was the first Class V Passenger Vessel company on the River Thames to voluntarily adopt the International Maritime Organisation’s International Safety Management (ISM) Code and was issued with an Interim Document of Compliance in July 2017.
Key Responsibilities
Vessel Operations
- Provide solid support to the master of the vessel to safely navigate and operate company vessels at all times.
- Ensure the safe passage of the vessel in accordance with company procedures and navigational regulations.
- Conduct pre-departure, operational and post-voyage safety checks.
- Support passenger embarkation and disembarkation procedures.
Safety and Compliance
- Ensure the safety of passengers, crew, contractors and visitors at all times.
- Comply with the company’s Safety Management System and ISM procedures.
- Maintain statutory certification, maintenance records and safety equipment.
- Assist during audits, inspections and certification processes.
- Participate in emergency drills and safety training exercises.
- Support annual reviews of safety management procedures.
Vessel Presentation
- Maintain the vessel to the high presentation standards expected by the company.
- Ensure machinery spaces, decks and operational areas remain clean and organised.
- Wear company uniform and appropriate PPE as required.
Dry Dock and Major Maintenance
- Support vessel dry-docking activities and major maintenance projects.
- Attend and work onboard during dry-dock periods where required.
- Assist with inspections, surveys, repairs and recommissioning activities.
Stakeholder and Partner Relations
- Act professionally when dealing with passengers, suppliers, contractors, partners, regulators and members of the public.
- Support effective communication between operational partners and the Marine Director and Chief Engineer.
- Represent Woods’ Silver Fleet in a positive and professional manner at all times.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential:
- GCSE in Maths and English.
