Cory Group is recruiting for the position of Mechanical Engineer at their Energy from Waste (EfW) Facility in Belvedere, Kent.

We operate one of the largest energy from waste facilities in the country, located on the banks of the River Thames in London. With a second EfW under construction and expansions in our waste transfer business, you will play a pivotal role in our future success.

Primary Purpose of the Role

The Mechanical Engineer will be primarily responsible for supporting the development of the strategic elements and resilience of the Cory Group as a business to be best in class. They will plan and develop major outage projects as well as provide technical support to the Maintenance Team when required to help maintain high plant availability.

The Mechanical Engineer is expected to form a professional relationship and work closely with the Operations, Maintenance, Assurance and Logistics teams to: maximise the operational efficiency of the EfW Facility at Belvedere; develop Best Practices for resilience of the Assets; and consolidate contracts for continual improvement with cost efficiencies.

Expectations are that the Mechanical Engineer will:

  • Assist in the development of the business strategies for 6 months – 15 years taking into consideration: statutory regulations, resilience of the assets (availability & reliability) obsolescence, sustainability (waste, water, electrical consumption/preservation) and influence on company policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate an effective health, safety and environmental culture for all personnel, plant and processes.
  • Deliver on financial and technical performance objectives.
  • Assist in the preparation and management of a 15-year budget (reviewed annually) that includes obsolescence, resilience, life cycle and plant improvements.
  • Become familiar with the International Standards for Asset Management, Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM), Total Productive Maintenance (TPM), Top Down Bottom Up approach to aid in the development of 6-year business plans (reviewed annually).
  • Contribute towards the development and maintenance of the Enterprise Asset Management System for the business.
  • Develop functional specifications for long-term service agreements (LTSA) and consolidated maintenance contracts for Cory Group.
  • Plan, develop and lead planned outage maintenance events and lead major projects.

Health, Safety & Environmental

  • To develop, implement and manage health, safety & environmental policies and procedures.
  • To have an understanding of the requirements of health and safety legislation as it applies to the business which includes, but is not limited to: Health & Safety at Work Act, Management of Health & Safety at
  • Work Regulations, Construction (Design & Management), Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH), Lifting Operations & Lifting Equipment (LOLER), Provision & Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER), Work at Height Regulations, Pressure System Safety Regulations (PSSR) and Electricity at Work Regulations.
  • Ensure Safe Systems of Work are maintained with the utilisation of: Risk Assessments to identify the control measures for significant hazards, Methods Statement for complex activities and a safety document (e.g. Permit to Work) to safeguard safety from the system (process safety).
  • Report, review & investigate accidents or incidents at the EfW facility, liaising with the CRE health & safety department or external agencies when required.
  • Develop standard maintenance procedures for critical and non-regular activities.
  • Investigate and implement actions arising from internal & external audits.
  • Deliver consistently high Health and Safety standards associated to Engineering Projects and Planned Maintenance Outages.
  • To be able to initiate, lead and perform a hazard & operability (HAZOP) or Hazard Identification (HAZID) studies.
  • Attend monthly H&S meetings and provide a contribution to all associated H&S discussions and actions.
  • Implement work procedures and work instructions including site safety rules.
  • Report accidents and near misses and participate in investigations.
  • Understand and champion site Health, Safety and Environmental policies.
  • Understand the CRE Environment Management System (Safety Management System) (IMS).
  • Report any environmental concerns to management.
  • Assist in the upkeep of the health and safety files under the CDM regulations.

Asset Management

  • Be aware of new and current technologies and make sure plant, equipment and vehicles are utilised to maximum efficiency.
  • Provide engineering support to the maintenance team to assist in the identification of faults and problems on all mechanical plant and equipment.
  • Provide conditioning monitoring expertise and support to the maintenance team.
  • Perform fault finding and technical diagnosis involved with system and equipment fault rectification.
  • Report reoccurring, serious and/or unusual defects to the Engineering Manager and take corrective action in accordance with company procedures.
  • Assist in the development, upkeep and review of Maintenance Strategies and Best Practices for the EfW Facility and other business entities, supporting the overall business needs of Cory Riverside Energy.
  • Update the EAM system and store stock information in line with the maintenance strategy to ensure stock is correctly specified and the correct volumes are available to complete maintenance activities in a timely manner.
  • Identify critical spares and update store stock information to ensure stock levels are sufficient enough to protect the plant.
  • Ensure that adequate surveys and inspections of plant and equipment are carried out and take corrective action as required.
  • Coordinate and implement plant improvement projects and modifications.
  • Upkeep records associated to the Engineering Change Management process for CRE plant and equipment, from the approval of the conception of a project/modification to completion and close out of the documentation required for the Health & Safety file.
  • Develop scopes-of-work for major outages.
  • Produce detailed outage project plans using a suitable software package (MS Project).
  • Act as or support the outage lead Engineer to co-ordinate planned major outage projects.
  • Assist in the continued upkeep and updating of the document management system and its documentation.
  • Prepare reports associated to shutdown maintenance, engineering projects and failure investigations.
  • Assist in the development of annual, six year and 15-year maintenance plans.
  • Assist in the monitoring of plant performance and reliability against design parameters.
  • Working closely and effectively with the Engineering Manager to determine the priorities of the business to continually improve the reliability and resilience of the CRE assets.
  • Research technical engineering standards to ensure the reliability, capacity & efficiency of the asset is achieved.

Contract Management

  • Ensure detailed functional specifications are developed for competitive tender documents.
  • Ensure the Scope of Works for tender documents allow for competitive tendering and as much as possible, not restrained to single service providers.
  • Assist in the development, implementation and coordination of any Long-Term Service Agreements (LTSA) for the critical assets.
  • Assist the business in performing audits on suppliers of goods and services when requested.
  • To supervise contracts and contractors to ensure that there is compliance with the site inductions, safety rules and construction phase plans.
  • Be available out of hours to supervise maintenance activities, consult with the maintenance team and witness equipment tests.
  • Inspect and supervise work carried out by contractors to ensure that the work meets the required standards.
  • Develop and negotiate service contracts with contractors and suppliers.

Finance / Budgets

  • To contribute to the preparation, maintenance and submittal of the annual planned outage and Cap-Ex budgets in conjunction with other engineers for review by the Engineering Manager.
  • Ensure all contracts are suitably escalated to the Engineering Manager for financial approval.
  • Assist in the development of annual, six year and 15-year outage maintenance & Capex budgets.
  • Review the financial performance and expenditure against accountable budget.
  • Assist in the provision of monthly updates on variation to planned outage budgets and capital expenditure to date and forecast spend to end of year.

Team Management

  • Assist in developing key performance indicators to demonstrate the status of the objectives and department functions.
  • Flexibility to support other members of the engineering team and other departments of Cory Riverside Energy to meet the business needs.
  • To study problems as opportunities for continuous improvement with the objective to minimise faults but learn from those that happen to prevent reoccurrence.
  • Expectation to develop an individual professional development.

Communication

  • To form and maintain professional relationships with internal and external clients and service providers.
  • To notify the professional bodies in the event of any postponement of any legislative inspections.
  • To ensure detailed reports are submitted to meet the reporting needs of the business (e.g. Monthly Reports, Outage Reports)
  • Ensure commitments are in written format to hand over for periods of holidays, training, etc

Job requirements

The Person
The individual we are looking for will be able to demonstrate the following knowledge, skills and experience:

Experience

  • A proven track record working as a Mechanical Technician or higher in an EfW or similar setting.

Qualifications

  • Working towards or holds a BEng (Hons) or BSc (Hons) Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Actively working towards professional registration (IEng/CEng).
  • NEBOSH Construction Certificate.
